Interview with National Geographic Emerging Explorer

Ken Banks, founder of kiwanja.net, devotes himself to the application of mobile technology for positive social and environmental change in the developing world, and has spent the last two decades working on projects in Africa. His early research resulted in the development of FrontlineSMS, an award-winning text messaging field communication system aimed at grassroots non-profit organizations.

We need more humility in development and to think about how we can best help people to help themselves Tweet This Quote

  • What exactly is he trying to achieve with this?

What exact type of change does he hope to see with his technology?

  • I love how he says, “Live light.” Don’t be afraid to do something that you want to do or explore. Be bold, especially before it is too late to be bold. Ken Banks also says to not fight life off. Instead, welcome it. There is so much that we can do. The hardest part is going through with a decision and doing it. Actions truly speak larger than words.

  • What a neat career. He was open to change and as opportunities rose that he could make a difference he was flexible enough to help with that opportunity. By making himself available and his knowledge of computers and technologies at that time he was able to help develop solutions for communities in Africa.

  • To me being bold means taking risk, calculated risk. Weather its financial risk or risk in a social environment Life would be pretty dull if you never risked anything. I also think you can never be too old to be bold. Unwillingness to to be bold leads to missed opportunities. Sure, playing it safe means you never risk losing but you’ll also never have a chance to win.

  • True. Injustice it is plenty visible in the world, especially today. And for this reason, it is a good motivation that can push people to work and change the world to make everybody benefit from this. It is not easy and we might not seems the results as soon as we expect. But with persistence and time, the things will start to modify.
