Using Plant-Based Tech To Bring Clean Water To Millions

On an otherwise reasonable evening, more than 1,000 people packed an auditorium in Boulder, Colorado, for the culmination of the 2012 Unreasonable Institute. They came to see 23 ventures present their solutions to some of the world’s greatest challenges.


Pedro Tomas Delgado, Founder of Agua Inc. (formerly named Aguaphytex) has a sustainable solution for the 900 million people who don’t have access to clean water.

Aquaphytex is a pioneer company and a global leader in biotechnological production, installation and maintenance of plant material for its use in depuration systems of wastewater. An innovative, creative, and dynamic company in phytodepuration (purification using plants), which offers a natural, effective, clean and low cost alternative to the obsolete, expensive and pollutant traditional physicochemical depuration.

What is the urgent social or environmental need you’re addressing?

900 million people in the World don’t have access to drinking Water. Almost 2,5 million lack access to basic sanitation. 894 million don’t have access to clean fresh water to satisfy their basic needs to drink, clean and cooking. Each 20 seconds a child dies as a consequence of the lack of sanitation. The consequence? 1,5 million deaths a year, that could be avoided.
Aquaphytex works to stop the high percentage of people without sustainable access to drinking water, with an economical alternative for treatment of wastewater. The population where we work can’t make big investments due to their economic situation. For this reason, Aquaphytex also contributes to the economic and social development making the wastewater treatment the main activity of the population.

What is your solution to this need? Describe your business strategy.

We use plants in a flotation system that doesn’t require energy consumption / electric energy and allows the integration of the plants in the landscape, it is very simple to maintain and does not generate sludge. The business model of Aquaphytex, is based in the biotechnological production of vegetable material, installation and maintenance of an innovative system of wastewater treatment, and it is a creative and dynamic company.
The strategy of Aquaphytex is based in two points: the development of the areas in where the water is treated and the creation of companies around it, pointing that the Water doesn’t belong to the big companies, but to the World population.

    I cannot believe that we are not utilizing this fantastic idea here in the US already. It is crazy that a plant could clean water just as well as chemicals could. This green water is truly our future. I cannot wait for the day that this technology is used all over the world to clean water.

    I completely agree, David. It’s absolutely fascinating to read and view things like this that seem so common sense and wonder why on earth the U.S. doesn’t take advantage of a natural process such as this water purification process. It saddens me greatly that the U.S. is so addicted to purchasing things like chemicals to solve our problems, when the the reality is that nature is oftentimes all we really need. In my opinion, the chemicals often do more harm than good.

    i agree with you David, something like this is so much better for our planet and easier to do! using a plant is so much safer than some chemical. I think that this should be implemented universally!
