On an otherwise reasonable evening in July, more than 1,000 people packed an auditorium in Boulder, Colorado, for the culmination of the 2014 Unreasonable Institute. They came to watch 11 ventures present their solutions to some of the world’s greatest challenges.

In this video, Plastica founder and CEO Roman Sebekin explains how his Russian startup builds houses out of recycled plastic. The company recycles 10 percent of all plastic waste in the million-person city of Volgograd, where it is based, and turns it into bricks, paving tiles, and roof tiles—enough for four 100-square-meter (1,076-square feet) homes per month. The also runs educational programs—aimed at children and homeowners—to promote recycling, which Sebekin says is still not common in Russia.

To date, Plastica has saved 2,520 tons of plastic from landfills.
