In Uganda, preventable water-borne diseases like diarrhea are the leading cause of death for children under the age of five. Ten million Ugandans—nearly a third of the entire population—lack access to clean water. They rely on boiling water to make it safe, which in addition to being time consuming, burns valuable charcoal that would otherwise be used for cooking.

Recent Harvard graduates Kathy Ku and John Kye have found a solution—one that doesn’t rely on foreign aid or new technologies. It’s a clay pot.

Sustainable Point-Of-Use Treatment and Storage (SPOUTS) of Water makes the pots, about the size of large flowerpots, in a factory near Kampala, Uganda, from locally sourced clay and rice husks. During firing in a kiln, the rice husks burn away, leaving behind microscopic holes. The pots are then coated with silver nitrate, which is a biocide. When the pots are filled with water, the water seeps through the holes while physical contaminants get trapped. At the same time, the silver nitrate, which is a biocide, removes 99.9 percent of biological contaminants.

While the product is straightforward, SPOUTS of Water’s business plan is a bit trickier. The company has decided to enter the water-solutions space as a for-profit business, as the founders see that as the best way to make a lasting difference.

“We have created a product worth investing in that breaks the cycle of relying on free aid,” co-founder Kathy Ku says. “We’ve seen communities leave water pumps in disrepair once they’ve broken. The idea of behavior change is that if you pay for it, you’ll care for it. We believe that we can do the maximum amount of good if we are a profitable business.”

Traditionally, the problem of safe drinking water has been tasked to NGOs and nonprofits. Their models frequently deliver short-term solutions like distributing bottled water in times of disease outbreak, or building one centralized pump in a community, which isn’t always maintained. Aid models in Uganda also often rely on precarious outside funding, which drives them toward projects that appeal to donors, instead of toward decisions based on the needs and nuances of the region.

In addition to making sure customers have a sense of ownership with their filters, SPOUTS of Water’s solution creates a workplace for Ugandan potters to carry on the long tradition of making pottery and gives them a chance be an integral part of the mission to increase access to clean water.

Nearly 75,000 people currently use the pots, which sell for $20 through retailers. SPOUTS partners with microfinance institutes to help customers pay up front so that cost is not a limiting factor in reaching communities in immediate need. SPOUTS does make an exception in the cases of refugee camps, schools, and prisons, where the company distributes filters for free.

“Installing in the prisons was a reminder for why we offer free installations in public places,” Ku says. “At the prison, there were 1,500 people crammed into close quarters without any clean drinking water. They drank from the lake. Because it’s a closed space, we could see the immediate effects. We could see them being maintained, people lining up to get water, and people came up to us to thank us.”

SPOUTS currently sells around 400 pots per month. The company plans to scale up to 2,000 per month by the end of 2015 and expand into South Sudan.

Ku has obsessed about water access since her first stay in Uganda in 2010. She was teaching at an all-girls school and would make the two-kilometer walk each day with her host family to get water. Back at Harvard, she filled notebooks with designs for water filtration systems and tried to get other people interested. That’s how she met co-founder John Kye, who studied economics and graduated in 2014. Kye and Ku now both live in the SPOUTS factory.

Ku first proposed to build the water filter factory in 2012. Her efforts were recognized when SPOUTS of Water started winning awards and grants, including the Harvard Deans’ Cultural Entrepreneurship Challenge. Her vision grew legs with the help of Kumi University, which donated the plot of land for the factory. This early recognition validated the big goals she set before graduating and moving to Uganda. Ku is a rare breed. She is driven by ideals, yet firmly grounded in hard science and engineering.

“The big picture idea is no matter what I do, I hope my work goes towards leveling the playing ground,” Ku says. “It’s a lottery that I have the set of resources I do. Broadly, you want to pay that forward. I see it as if you have a far-fetched goal, something I’ll always work towards. That’s how I prefer to see things, without limits.”

Eventually, when the filter factory is fully self-sustaining, Ku hopes to attend medical school and then continue to address global health needs.

    Clean drinking water is a basic necessity most poor countries lack. As mentioned in the article people have to travel for miles to get access to clean water. Inventions like this make a great difference in lives of people in those countries. Having immediate access to clean drinking water is a remarkable turning point for a healthier life and families of the nation.

    It was thoughtful for the founders to have microfinance institutes in place to help the locals with the buying process. I agree with the founder’s opinion about care for the things when it is paid. It is human tendency to neglect on things which are readily given to them. While a product earned will be cared for in the long run as there was an effort involved in obtain the product.

    The interesting factor in the article is the price point, $20 for a product in a country where GDP per capita as per 2013 statistics is $571. So in relative terms the price is equivalent to spending $1716 [$49,000(GDP per capita in USA)/$571*20 is approx ] in USA. In my opinion the product is quite fascinating and creative. At the same time for any product to be successful in the long term will need to be affordable by a common man. And also should have provisions to change the filter at regular intervals.

    The product will find a widespread use if it can filter saline water to produce clean drinkable water. Such an apparatus will find its use in countries where drinking water is a scarcity while they have access to seawater. Also additions to eliminate metal contaminants will attract more buyers from various parts of the globe. In my opinion there is lot of room for this product to grow and be useful for many countries in the world.

    There are two really interesting behavioral elements here that are important to track. The first is the idea of whether paying for a product causes us to take more care and ownership of it. This reminds me of similar arguments that public spaces such as parks and pools should have modest entry or membership fees. This seems reasonable so long as there is evidence that this phenomena exists in this case and there is some sort of leeway so that cost is not a barrier for people in need without means. The system mentioned in the article makes sense, but I also wonder how a sliding-cost or ‘pay what you can’ system would work.
    The other element, is the redefinition of the business from a fundraising-driven to a private model. On the one hand it makes a lot of sense – it allows them to focus more on the actual consumers/product and ensures they have capital to contribute to their mission. However, it now also demands that they have the disciple to stay true to their mission as the temptation for profit begins to loom larger.

    Love that they took an entrepreneurial approach to this but there were countless predecessors before them. Potters for piece invented the technology and hydrologic health was the first social enterprise to create a business around it and is currently profitable. I hope they are learning from their predecessors and giving credit where it is due, or they are missing a big opportunity.

    People everyday tend to overthink this problem of
    clean water, and when something is overanalyzed and overcomplicated, the
    solution becomes this way as well.
    Something as simple as clay pots has the ability to purify water
    and make it safe to drink. Clean
    water is very important and most poor countries lack access to it, which
    is why it is vital to find a solution.
    Most of the poorer nations are stricken by disease due to their
    lack of clean drinking water. This
    clay pot purification has the potential to make a major impact on the
    lives of the people living in these countries.

    There are a few important aspects of this idea that were touched upon in
    this post that I found to be particularly eye-opening. First of them being the fact that
    SPOUTS of Water, the company developing these clay pots, believes that
    they can make a bigger impact by being a for-profit company. This theory is based on the fact that
    people care about objects that they purchase more than ones that they get
    for free. However, in my opinion,
    this company does not need to sell these pots for people to start caring
    about them. These pots will be
    their source of water and therefore, their source of life. That alone should be a good enough
    reason for them to care about these pots.

    Another important aspect that this post touches upon is the fact that
    this product has the potential to become more than just another
    short-term solution. Companies and
    non-profits are constantly raising money to send aid to these places in
    the form of bottles water and small water purifiers that eventually need
    replacement or constant maintenance.
    However, these pots are different in that their usability will not
    run out and they require little to no maintenance.

    Lastly, this article showed that these pots not only provide a solution
    to finding clean water in these poor nations, but they also help provide
    jobs to potters in these areas and these countries have the ability to
    stop relying on foreign aid and funding.
    They can make their own pots and therefore, provide themselves
    with clean water.

    However, while this article did provide a brief overview discussing the
    pots, the people behind the idea, the company creating them, and their
    way of operating, it did not explain how they plan on selling these pots
    in the poor countries that need them the most. If the purpose of these pots is to make
    the nations self-sufficient and not reliant on outside funding, then how
    will they be capable of purchasing these pots in the first place? This article was very thorough and
    concise, however, I believe there are still questions that go unanswered
    and there is still a major problem in these poor nations that require
    outside help and resources. While
    these pots might provide these nations with clean drinking water, they
    are still a ways away from not needing the aid of richer nations.
